In this TED Talk from 2013, Ron Finley explains what spurred him to start ‘guerrilla gardening’ in Los Angeles – the glut of fast-food outlets and rising levels of obesity locally.  Kerbsides and other unused green spaces have been turned into vegetable plots, maintained by volunteer gardeners, despite the authorities threatening to take legal action against them.  More than just food-growing, the plots have become an educational tool, as well as a transformational one for the city, and are an inspirational illustration of how individuals can bring about positive change against the odds and in unlikely circumstances.
