Shifting attitudes, consumer behaviour and climate policies, and the emergence of new technologies, mean that companies should invest in decarbonising their operations to ensure they are future-proof, a group of experts have argued.

One of the representatives from industry and governments, energy providers and sustainability experts said: “If Covid-19 is a disruption, then climate change is surely a longer-lasting and more severe disruption.”

They called on corporations to set zero-emissions targets in line with the Paris Agreement – by investing in energy-efficient technology, switching to zero-carbon power, heating and cooling, and using zero-emissions transportation.

The positive news is that more than 800 companies are known to have set science-based decarbonisation targets internationally, 225 have signed up to RE100 – a collaboration of businesses committed to 100% renewable electricity – and 70 businesses have joined EV100, a global initiative aimed at accelerating the transition to electric vehicles.
