How can we make sure that the food we are eating, and feeding to others, is not harmful – no matter how indirectly – to the environment or to communities?

For those of us beef and avocado afficionados, The Guardian‘s list of 10 of the world’s most controversial foods makes for uncomfortable reading.

Avocado farming causes deforestation and drought.  Bagged salad tends to be thrown out (still wrapped in plastic).  Beef contributes massively to greenhouse gas emissions.  Cod is being overfished to extinction.  Milk tends to come from intensively farmed, gas-producing cows.  Palm oil and soya production is wiping out forests.  Chocolate often involves child labour.  And prawn farming depletes mangrove swamps.

Helpfully, The Guardian article does include some positive advice for becoming a more ethical eater.
