Fashion retailer H&M and bottled water brand Danone-Aqua have joined forces to help solve Indonesia’s notorious marine plastic pollution problem.

Their Bottle2Fashion project will involve H&M selling children’s clothing made from recycled plastic waste collected from the coasts of the Southeast Asian country’s series of islands, which include Sumatra, Java, Borneo and New Guinea.

This project is part of H&M’s wider ‘Cleaning up for the future’ initiative, and clothing made from the PET bottles and other plastic waste includes hooded tops and joggers.  Danone-Aqua’s recycling centre in Indonesia sorts the collected waste, cleans it and shreds it.  This material is then turned into polyester fibre, which H&M mixes with organic cotton to make the clothing.

As the world becomes more aware of the fashion and bottled water industries’ negative environmental impacts, initiatives such as this one are an indication that there is hope for more sustainable practices from these corporate sectors.
