In July 2020, Canada joined the Global Ocean Alliance to help protect 30% of the world’s oceans by 2030.  The alliance, which includes countries such as the UK, aims to successfully lobby governments to establish marine protected areas and other area-based ocean conservation measures.

By signing up to the alliance, Canada is bolstering its existing marine conservation commitments.  It was previously working towards a target to protect 10% of the country’s marine and coastal areas by 2020, and had beaten this by reaching 13% in 2019.  It was also already working towards protecting 25% of marine and coastal areas by 2025.

Bernadette Jordan, Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard, said: “Our oceans provide a wealth of opportunity when approached from the position of sustainability and environmental stewardship.  Canada is proud to join the Global Ocean Alliance, working alongside like-minded countries to advocate for our shared vision of sustainable, healthy oceans around the world.”

The Global Ocean Alliance was founded in 2019 in the UK and has more than 20 countries signed up to the 30% conservation pledge.
