As a step towards success, the country’s Environment and Climate Change Minister announced in October 2020 that single-use packages/objects made from plastics, including grocery bags, straws, stir sticks, six-pack rings, cutlery, and food containers made will be out of use by the end of 2021. Local stores will provide alternatives. With the pandemic, the use of these hard-to-recycle plastics items has been growing exponentially, as people appreciate the health and safety associated with disposable plastics. Specifically, restaurants that have been restricted to takeaway orders will be impacted by the ban. Nonetheless, the government remains strict, as many alternatives are readily available. Local environmental groups warmly welcomed this news. They remain hopeful that the next step will be to eliminate plastics to stop relying on recycling facilities entirely.
