Brewer Budweiser is to phase out single-use plastic pack rings from its UK-produced beer, which includes the bestselling brand Stella Artois, by the end of 2020.
The group is upgrading production at its two UK factories to produce alternatives to single-use plastic, which include recyclable paperboard, wraps and boxes. It said the switch would help it eliminate 850 tons of plastic annually. This includes removing 250 tons of plastic rings used to hold packs of cans together, and 600 tons of shrink-film, which is largely used around trays when shipping.
The brewer is also switching to 100% locally sourced barley and 100% renewable electricity from solar power.
Meanwhile, Heineken has made a similar move, replacing plastic rings on multipacks with cardboard in the UK.
The switch will initially be made to Heineken, Foster’s and Kronenbourg 1664 packs, followed by Strongbow, Bulmer’s, Red Stripe and John Smith’s in 2021.
