A community farm which helped to feed people in need after the coronavirus pandemic hit the US in early 2020 is an ongoing example of how such volunteer-staffed projects can sustainably come to the aid of citizens facing hardship in uncertain times.
The non-profit farm, JK Community Farm in Purcellville, Virginia, donates all of its organically grown produce to local food outlets, feeding thousands of the state’s residents who would otherwise go without.
“Our farm is 150 acres,” said the farm’s Samantha Kuhn. “Our mission is to alleviate hunger in our region with healthy, nutrient-dense, chemical-free produce and protein. So, 100 per cent of what we grow is donated to local food banks and food pantries.”
The farm relies on volunteers who pick the produce and load it onto a truck for distribution. It is currently only using about half of its land, and would like to expand its output if it can find enough volunteers to process its crops.
This is an inspiring story that shows how food insecurity can be tackled, even in a supposedly prosperous country.
