An environmental YouTuber, called MrBeast, has pledged to help plant 20 million trees around the world by 2020 after achieving 20 million subscribers to his channel.
Describing the #TeamTrees campaign as “the largest YouTube collaboration of all time”, he is asking his followers for their help and has teamed up with Arbour Day Foundation, the biggest tree-planting organisation in the world. For each dollar donated, the foundation will plant one tree “in a forest of high need”. Public figures including tech entrepreneur Elon Musk have given their support to the campaign.
Meanwhile, footwear and apparel brand Timberland has pledged to plant 50 million trees around the world by 2025. Since 2001, the company has planted more than 10 million trees worldwide, but is upping the programme significantly over the next five years. Timberland is partnering with organisations such as the Smallholder Farmers Alliance and Trees for the Future to realise its target, which will initially see it fund the planting of trees in Haiti, China, the Dominican Republic, the US and Mali.
To publicise the planting programme, Timberland has launched its Nature Needs Heroes campaign. The campaign champions 12 everyday “eco-heroes” who are making a positive environmental impact through their work, encouraging customers to be inspired by them to take small actions in pursuit of a sustainable future.
