In early 2020, a law came into effect in Portugal that bans shops from using plastic bags and trays to package bread, fruit and vegetables.  The law applies to “all commercial establishments that sell bread, vegetables and fruits”.

Portuguese shops, food manufacturers and producers must no longer provide their products in these single-use packaging materials, which have become commonplace in supermarket fruit and veg aisles around the world.  The ban on the plastic wrapping and polystyrene trays is aimed at cutting the pollution caused when they are improperly disposed of.

At the same time, Portugal also passed a law banning the sale of disposable plastic crockery, which applies to cafés and restaurants, shops and the organisers of public events.

Again, the law is aimed at curbing the pollution caused by these items, as well as being part of a wider ambition both in this country and elsewhere to move away from single-use plastic in favour of more sustainable alternatives.
