UK chocolate brand Montezuma’s has overhauled its packaging to remove all non-recyclable material. Its products are now packaged in paper and card, which is printed with sustainable ink and features recyclable stickers and tape and eco-friendly adhesive, all of which can be either recycled or composted, or is biodegradable.
“We believe we are the first chocolate company to offer 100% sustainable packaging on our entire range. We’ve also done as much as we can to make sure that we reuse or repurpose, so that we’re not throwing anything away,” said Montezuma’s managing director Bruce Alexander.
He added that some plastic is still used, but it is recyclable. “We’re still using some plastics and while we’d love to get rid of them altogether, our biggest challenge is the fact that food needs to be packaged safely. We’ve taken as many steps as we can, but we’ve made sure that any plastic we do use is totally recyclable.”
Plastic is used to give wrapping enough strength to make it food-safe. Montezuma’s chocolate bar wrappers are 81% paper and 19% plastic, which is recycled by at least 75% of councils in the UK.
