Former US vice-president Al Gore’s Earth in the Balance: Ecology and the Human Spirit was published in 1992, and nearly three decades later has the advantage of being proved right in terms of the current climate crisis and lack of political will to solve it.  Arguing that  governments cannot be trusted to put the world’s health before immediate economic and other needs, Gore calls for a Global Marshall Plan that will tax people and companies adequately and curtail environmentally harmful activity.  He describes how the choices we make are damaging our planet, and although the call to arms is largely a spiritual one (recognition that we can do better), the solution relies on laws to make us (individually and nationally) do better.
