Originally published in 1988, The Dream of the Earth is a cornerstone book in the ecology movement, arguing that mankind’s actions should be judged solely by the benefit they bring to the planet, and that people and the Earth will only thrive if we have a restorative, rather than exploitative and destructive, relationship with the world.  Calling for lifestyle changes that will enable this to happen, the author (a Catholic priest) draws upon both science and religion, as well as politics, to make his case, and uses the perspectives of other cultures – from native American to Chinese – to illustrate how established Western ideology is not necessarily the best way forward if we are to live harmoniously with the natural world on which we depend.
