Children’s book The Promise is a poetic tale about a place where nothing grows, until one day the protagonist – a thief – is urged by the owner of a bag she is stealing to plant the acorns that are inside it. Nicola Davies’ environmental message – helped in the telling by Laura Carlin’s lovely illustrations – is that we have to act to make change happen, that there is hope even when things look pretty bleak, and that doing something good, even if it is a small thing, can have a far-reaching, world-changing knock-on effect.
