In The Skeptical Environmentalist: Measuring the Real State of the World, Bjørn Lomborg tackles overpopulation, energy resources, water shortages and climate change, taking the controversial stance that the negativity around all these things – the ‘doom-mongering’ – is overblown and unhelpful. He cites improving air quality, increased human longevity and what he calls an exaggeration of the climate crisis, among other things, as reasons to be cheerful. Lomborg, then, will not be to everyone’s taste. There is nothing wrong with taking perceived wisdom to task, but the reader should, like the author, be sceptical of the claims made in this nonetheless interesting book.
