South African artist Mbongeni Buthelezi has spent the past 20 years creating artwork from waste plastic. Unable to afford standard artist materials such as paint, brushes and canvases, and hearing about the growing plastic pollution problem, he decided to kill two birds with one stone by turning discarded materials into masterpieces. Buthelezi’s work has been exhibited at the Museum of African Art in New York, the Goch Museum in Germany and at the Prague Biennale. “I feel so proud when I see a complete work of art that I produced from recycled materials,” he says.
