Earth Island Institute is a wildlife and ocean conservation organisation that was founded in 1982 by the celebrated environmentalist David Bower. It is the central hub for more than 75 active projects around the world, which work at a grassroots level to protect marine life, tackle plastic pollution, preserve forests and help indigenous leaders conserve sacred sites. These projects are also involved in restoring wetlands, greening schools and encouraging children to spend more time outside in nature.
It runs awards programmes to encourage and recognise young leaders in the environmental movement, and publishes the informative and campaigning Earth Island Journal. The organisation also runs Earth Island Advocates, a legal team offering protection to wildlife and wild spaces and counsel to environmental groups and activists.
