The Rainforest Trust is an international conservation charity that preserves endangered rainforests and the animals that live in them by purchasing land that is under threat, engaging communities and partnering with key local organisations. To date it has helped to save 24 million acres of forest from destruction, and is working towards the aim of safeguarding 50 million acres.
As well as purchasing land in order to save forests, the charity’s local partnerships result in land being designated as protected areas, such as national parks and reserves, by the respective country’s government. It also helps to create ‘community-managed areas’, whereby residents – often indigenous people – are enabled to manage their land and preserve it from development. Recent achievements include an expansion of designated protected forest in Papua New Guinea.
