The Wyss Foundation is a private, charitable organisation with the stated aim of ‘supporting innovative, lasting solutions that improve lives, empower communities, and strengthen connections to the land’. Perhaps its most notable project is the Campaign for Nature, a partnership between itself, the National Geographic Society and 100 other global conservation organisations. This follows the launch of the Wyss Campaign for Nature, a $1bn fund to conserve 30% of the planet in its natural state by 2030.
Wyss hopes to achieve this target by using the money to create and expand protected areas, establish global conservation targets, invest in the science to identify the optimal strategies to achieve the set goals, inspire local conservation efforts and increase awareness. The campaign specifically focuses on ensuring organisations and policy-makers approach biodiversity conservation in a way that fully integrates and respects the rights of indigenous people.
So far, the campaign has helped conserve nearly 40 million acres of land and water by providing financial support to local conservation efforts around the globe, including in Mexico, Europe, Canada, Africa, South America, the United States and New South Wales in Australia. For the latter, over $4m was provided to Nature Conservancy Australia in order to fund schemes such as the establishment of a 216,000-acre sustainable agriculture zone.
