Founded in 2012 with a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Apeel works with food producers ranging from smallholder farmers and local organic growers to big-name food brands, adding its ‘peel’ to their produce in order to extend its life – which as well as making the food supply system more sustainable, also increases profits for growers. It currently supplies several grocery chain stores across the US.
