Materials Experience Lab is an experimental material maker based in the Netherlands, and is the organisation behind ‘biogarmentry’ – plant-based clothes that are not only alive but are still photosynthesising, meaning that the wearer is absorbing carbon dioxide from the air around them.  Intended to tackle the environmental impact of fast fashion, the living textiles are grown from algae.

The company believes that if algae-based clothing takes off, it will help people switch from buy, use, dispose to ‘buy, care for and compost’ – and it is currently working with Avans University of Applied Sciences in the Netherlands to explore refinement and extension of the project.
