Soul Fire Farm, based in upstate New York, is a black, indigenous and people of colour (BIPOC)-centred community farm with a mission to end racism and injustice in the food system. The inspiring farm focuses on reclaiming agency in the industry through training thousands of individuals who historically have been excluded from top managerial farming roles in the United States.
Soul Fire Farm has three main activities: using Afro-indigenous agricultural practices to restore land for communities who need food; providing training programmes to those who want to learn more about farming practices, focusing on anthropology, and Afro-indigenous and regenerative agricultural practices that better the environment as opposed to harming it; and working on policy change and reparation to help farmers access land and resources more easily.
In addition, the farm donates its produce to families in the Capital Region of New York State that lack access to healthy and inexpensive fruit and vegetables. The founding co-director, Leah Penniman, has also written Farming While Black: Soul Fire Farm’s Practical Guide to Liberation on the Land – a comprehensive guide to farming, including finding land and resources, restoring degraded land, and building a movement through education, direct action and policy change. All profits are donated to black farmers.
