Children and (some) adults love glitter, the former for use in crafting and creating, the latter as part of their make-up. But until recently, the shiny stuff was made from plastic, a particular problem as a lot of glitter ends up being washed down the plug hole. This microplastic pollution is frequently consumed by fish, birds and other animals.
Not all glitter is bad, though. Today’s environmentally friendly suppliers include Eco Glitter Fun, which sells biodegradable glitter that is certified as being either free from or almost free from plastic. Its packaging is also plastic-free. The Bioglitter SPARKLE line is 92% plastic-free, but still degrades in water. The Bioglitter PURE line is 100% plastic-free and biodegrades in water.
Products range from ‘festival glitter’ to craft glitter to ‘beard glitter’, and all of it comes in aluminium tins or glass jars. Accessories include a fan made from paper and bamboo, which can be branded. The company also donates to non-profit organisation Plastic Oceans.
Another supplier is Glamavan, whose glitter will degrade within weeks when in water or soil. Its High Shine range is vegan and takes 28 days to degrade, while its Softer range is microplastic-free and aluminium-free. Glamavan Glitter Gel, meanwhile, is made from aloe vera and is not tested on animals.
Furthermore, its products are packaged in reusable and recyclable tinplate and aluminium tins which are ethically and sustainably sourced.
