Very few of us put absolutely nothing in the household waste bin – the one that gets picked up and sent to the local tip, where it tends to be either diverted to incineration or sent to landfill. That, of course, is because there are just some things that don’t go in the recylcing bin – and this is true for consumers and businesses alike.
One solution to that problem would be for manufacturers and retailers to stop making and selling products that cannot be reused or recycled. Another idea is to ‘recycle the unrecyclable’ and turn this waste into commercially viable materials and products. The first solution is unlikely to happen in the near future; fortunately, the second idea has already been seized upon.
TerraCycle is the world’s leader in the collection and reuse of non-recyclable, post-consumer waste. Working with more than 100 major brands in over 20 countries around the world, it collects used packaging and products that would otherwise be destined for landfill. It repurposes that waste into new, innovative materials and products that are available online and through major retailers.
Its Zero Waste Box is a complete and convenient solution which includes the storage, shipping and recycling of a particular type of waste that isn’t currently recycled through local councils or traditional recycling facilities.
Walkers partnered with TerraCycle for its Crisp Packet Recycling Scheme to reduce the impact of its packaging on the environment. ACUVUE and Johnson & Johnson Vision also partnered with TerraCycle for its Contact Lens Recycle Programme. And with Colgate, TerraCycle launched the Oral Care Recycling Programme.
