Just because you are environmentally friendly, you don’t have to be a party-pooper.  There seems to be an unwritten law that children’s parties must involve balloons.  Which is fine, so long as they are disposed of properly afterwards and are not released – which ends in them polluting the environment and harming wildlife.

Avoid ‘foil’ balloons, which are made from a kind of metalicised polyester and are environmentally damaging both in production and disposal.  Standard balloons are made from latex, which is biodegradable – but even here you should note that they can take up to four years or more to degrade out in the open and can cause harm to animals in the meantime.

Little Cherry recommends that its Biodegradable Balloons & Ribbon are disposed of in a compost heap – where it says they will degrade within months – or sent to landfill, where they will break down safely.  Obviously the first option is the best one.  The balloons here are latex, and the ribbon is made from natural rafia.
