Based in Antwerp, Belgium, ecoBirdy is making sustainable children’s furniture out of recycled plastic toys. Although a bit pricey for many (ranging from chairs for €159 to €320 for kiwi-shaped storage solutions, they are not positioned to compete with the likes of Ikea), these products are undeniably eye-catchingly stylish and ergonomic.
The speckled Charlie Chairs and Luisa Tables are made from recycled pieces of plastic toys, using a patented process to form a terrazzo-like material that the company calls ecothylene, and are appropriate for indoor and outdoor use. The kiwi-shaped storage Containers, meanwhile, are intended to raise awareness of the endangered species, and the speckled Rhino Lamps likewise draw attention to the animal and the subject of plastic recycling.
The source material is collected from European waste streams, and the products themselves can be recycled when they are no longer needed. They are further unique in that the use of old toys and the production process mean that no two items are identical. ecoBirdy also offers its ecothylene material to other companies to use in their products.
