Beanbags are one of those products that are universally loved by children (and some adults too), but they have traditionally been made with a lot of plastic – the bean fillings being the main culprit here (Styrofoam beans take hundreds of years to break down and when leaked to the ocean will float on the surface for decades). We have found one company though that offers a range of eco alternatives!
The Big Beanbag Company‘s bags, chairs and stools are filled with BioFoam beads, which are a plant-based compostable material that lasts for 10 years – avoiding the need for Styrofoam and single-use plastic. The 100% cotton casings, meanwhile, are stitched with thread manufactured from recycled plastic bottles, and all materials used can be repurposed or recycled.
Aside from a range of accessories, its main products include The Bean Bag, which comes in three colours and costs £159.95; The Bean Chair, available in Pebble & Orca, Cream & Cocoa and Dove & Oyster, costing £199.95; and The Bean Stool, which costs £111.95.
These won’t suit every budget, but they are a comfy alternative to their plastic-filled competitors. The company also makes poufs, cushions and BioFoam refills – which can be used either in its own beanbags or to replace the Styrofoam in other beanbags.
