There are a number of companies out there providing signage made from environmentally friendly materials and sources.

Sign-Rite prints signs on compostable outdoor-use ‘eco-cardboard’, which in landfill will decompose in four years, compared with 450 years for standard plastics and PVC-free rigid boards.  The company uses natural materials for its signage, including 3D wood (for 3D printing) and metal, and prints using eco-solvent digital inks (where the solvent is biodegradable and free of volatile organic compounds).  It also refurbishes and re-uses signs where possible.  With illuminated signs it offers LED products for lower electricity consumption.

For indoor signage, QPS’s eco signage options include its internal displays printed on DISPA board (made from FSC-certified paper), Dufaylite (made using recycled paper), Xanita (made from fibreboard manufactured using recycled cardboard boxes), and paper-based Re-board (which is claimed to be the first board brand in the world to independently measure its CO2 emissions), among other products.

Digital Plus, meanwhile, offers signs printed on Bubble Board – a recyclable, non-PVC printable board material made of polypropylene that is weatherproof and can be used both indoors and outdoors.  The company says the material matches the durability aspects of the PVC and plastic foam alternatives while being foldable and lightweight; it is also a lower-cost alternative to the more common Foamex or rigid foam PVC products.

Impress also prints signage on a sustainable sign and display board that is made of 100% paper, is FSC-certified and 100% recyclable.  Impress is a registered Carbon Balanced Publication Printer, part of a World Land Trust-run scheme, which means the carbon impact of its business is calculated and offset, while its inks do not contain VOCs and are free from animal-derived ingredients.

Lastly, Benson Signs runs its operations on 100% renewable energy, sources as much recycled materials as possible for sign production, and makes local deliveries (it is based in Liverpool) in an electric van.  More than 90% of its waste is recycled and it has been awarded the Carbon Trust Standard for its CO2 reduction work.  It offers a range of sign printing and engraving products and services in a variety of mediums.
