Food & Forest sells sweet and savoury nuts at Borough Market in London, and online, which have been cultivated following the principles of agroforestry – a combination of farming and permaculture where the aim is to increase the amount of tree cover on the land.
Trees including hazel and walnut are planted with cereals in a process called alley cropping, which reduces soil loss by up to 50%, as well as helping to clean rivers and restore soil integrity. The farms are located in the UK, as well as Spain, France and Italy.
All profits from the enterprise are used to promote alley cropping – using crops in between rows of trees – as a sustainable method of growing food.
Products include hazelnuts, walnuts, almonds and cobnuts.
